“Gift” by Feminist Image Group (excerpted from curatorial statement by Lisa Hutton)

An exhibition by the San Diego artist collective Feminist Image Group, “Gift” investigates the age-old concept of gift giving. The exhibition explores the varied contexts of offerings in the
arts, be these personal, corporate, or institutional. As a part of San Diego Mesa College Art Gallery’s focus on Women’s History Month, the exhibition directly reflects the
interconnectedness of the populace and the choices made in society, exposing a hybrid of irony, pathos, and joy.

“Gift” unites across genre, age, and medium, through its interrogation of the nature of generosity. The artwork ranges from high concept, to new age, to feminine handicraft, to
themes of motherhood, to global issues for caution. The complex engagement of women’s voices is fore-grounded, and the audience finds narratives of sacrifice, motivation, time,
energy, and a collective interest by women toward both sharing and reciprocation.

“Gift” is organized as an interactive, audience-centered opening and exhibition. To this end, FIG members will offer gifts to the gallery audience during the opening reception that relate to
their installation or artwork. These promotional gifts and actions follow the contemporary arts practice of audience engagement and exchange to interrogate both personal and
institutional relationships.

Gallery Hours: MTW 11-4 pm, Thursday 11 – 8 pm. Closed Fridays, weekends and school holidays.
